Do you have your Christmas tree up yet? Do you cut one down or take one down from the shelf?
We went to artificial the same year we realized that the reason our youngest son was sick every Christmas was a severe allergy to the tree. I look back at those pictures of the boys by the tree and feel kind of bad that I hadn’t really noticed how much worse he felt/looked smack dab under the tree. I digress.
For me, decorating the tree is very orderly and deliberate. The ornaments are all stored by “style/category.” We have collected ornaments as souvenirs-one category. Wooden ornaments that we have painted as a family after Thanksgiving dinner for years-another category. The Mr.’s grandmother hand-made ornaments as a gift to us every year before her passing-yet another category. You get the idea. By putting them on by category, the tree doesn’t get lopsided with all souvenirs or all Gramma’s ornaments-and anyone who knows the least bit of OCD knows that would never do. I have been tempted, but never acted on it, to volunteer to rearrange the ornaments on a tree if they appear to have been placed willy nilly with no consideration for style or category.
I actually love the process-it isn’t as angst filled as it sounds. The memories of Christmas past flood my mind as I place each ornament-I am warmed with the thought of family, the trips we have taken, the laughter as we painted little Santa faces. Putting the tree up this year has a special story behind it.
