Holidays are synonymous with family gatherings. Circumstances have often dictated my absence from holiday celebrations in OK. It is possible, however, to find ways to connect generations-it takes some creative thinking-a red rental van and a commitment to find ways to bring your family of origin and your children/their children together outside the traditional gathering times of Thanksgiving and Christmas.
This photo conveys this possibility:
Years ago our folks sent out a may day call when they felt that “things had gotten away from them.” Though in reasonably good health, they couldn’t tackle the job of scraping the house and then painting it. The 5 siblings all kicked in and set a date. The Mr. and I thought it would be a great experience for our then 3-year-old granddaughter (she is now a beautiful 17-year-old) and then 11-year-old grandson ( he is now a 25 young man) to participate, contribute, serve their great grandparents.
I love this photo of the two of them working together on the front porch. They bonded with each other-their great aunts-their great uncles and, of course, their great grandparents. The road trip to and from was an absolute blessing of time.
So, if your circumstances didn’t allow you to be with family during the holidays-I hope you can find the occasion to make memories, make connections, and, maybe, turn a chore into a life long memory
