I love your (fill in the blank)!  Where did you get it?  Do you ever hesitate if it is from Goodwill?

Shopping at a thrift store (buying resale) is no different than the long accepted practice of buying antiques and collectibles, used cars and boats, and coveted first edition books. But, we sometimes are hesitant to buy off the racks at Goodwill. That statement may or may not help to erase the stigma of buying 2nd hand clothes. When the economy is weak , more people shop thrift stores-stigmal or no. But, there is a slight shift in thinking in the last few years regarding wardrobes gleaned from Goodwill racks. These finds are now viewed as “vintage” or are associated with quality-a name brand shirt for $4 makes you want to tell everyone how clever you are to shop thrift.

I grew up with “hand me downs.” Unfortunately those hand me downs were from my brothers!!! I was horrified at the 4th grade when I showed up at school wearing my brother’s coat, only to see another student, a boy, with the same coat. Sadly, it was a garish purple and orange plaid that no one could miss. I really don’t see thrift store buys very differently-the clothes were worn by another person-now you are wearing them. AND at a thrift store I can buy clothes previously worn by GIRLS!

THIS is why I love thrift shopping. My two red jackets get lots of wear around Christmas time. I didn't feel at all guilty adding a little red purse to the look, because I found it for $5!! Always. Always. get compliments.
