Tuesday: lilac

Everything that slows us down and forces patience,
everything that sets us back into the slow circles of nature, is a help.
Gardening is an instrument of grace.   ~ May Sarton

The color lilac is kind of a romantic color-a little old-fashioned and speaks of spring.   Most often when we speak of the color lilac, we are referring to the lilac bush.  Spokane, Washington and Lombard, Illinois are both recognized for their tribute to the lilac bush with festivals and parades.

this is what you would call a "Photo A Day" fail: when we put our heads together and plan out the calendar for the month, we consider holidays, seasons, etc. Well, for the first week of June the color of "lilac" seemed so clever, since my lilacs usually are blooming and their color is fantastically lilac. Here is the hint of what will be later, but not the first week of June....

So, in its stead, enjoy the lovely Cleome.  I did some container gardening planting this week and I planted Cleome (spider plant ~ klé o me) in a beautiful blue Chinese fish bowl. The color lilac is a blend of the colors red, white and blue so the blue undertones in the Cleome coordinate perfectly with its new home for the summer.

Are your lilacs in bloom yet?  The fragrance of a row of lilacs in bloom is truly Heaven sent & Heaven scent : )  What fragrances do you love in a garden?  Honeysuckle, jasmine?  We hope you find yourself in the slow circle of nature this week.
