Tuesday: something white post

I love white shirts because they feel like a security blanket. You can wear them with anything. It’s the person and the way that they wear it that makes it different. I have been designing white shirts forever, but I don’t get tired of it. Caroline Herrera

With some regularity, fashion magazines publish a list of wardrobe essentials.  I haven’t seen one yet that didn’t include a crisp white shirt-it is classic, timeless.

And versatile-it looks good with silver jewelry, gold, black and white, pearls, etc.  It can be dressed up or down-worn open with a tank, under a jacket or as we learned from movie star, Sharon Stone, with a formal skirt on the red carpet.

I’m not really on the cutting edge of fashion, so I doubt I will attend a formal affair with a snazzy white shirt and satin skirt-but, I do always have 2-3 white shirts in my closet and enjoy their year round versatility.  All winter, a white shirt with a beautiful pashmina or wrap looks cozy and comfortable.    For summer, black and white prints + a crisp white shirt=cool.

For those of us of a certain generation, the image of Audrey Hepburn in a white man’s shirt knotted in front to show off her tiny waist, sent all the teeny boppers to the boy’s department looking for white shirts.  That is where my love affair with white shirts started-how bout you?  Do you want to run out and buy a white shirt and black skirt everytime you see fashion designer Caroline Herrera close her fashion shows in her simple uniform of white shirt/black skirt?  Any secrets on how you keep your white shirt white?  And, finally, don’t you love the idea of a simple white shirt as an excuse to wear over the top jewelry?
