Lincoln Memorial

Several years ago, I was explaining the election of a President to a Chinese student. At the end, I said, “But the greatest, the most remarkable thing of all is that we will have a transition of government without chaos.”

Over the course of 56 elections, we have had 44 different Presidents.  Some of them quite famous.  Some of them have faded into obscurity.  But in each case, there was a peaceful change of leadership with a new President, a new cabinet, new legislators elected or reelected.

On November 8, 2016, we will once again elect a new President who will take the Oath of Office on January 20, 2017, and will officially become President at 12 o’clock noon.  No matter who is elected, we must pray that our leaders will be wise, will have integrity and will understand the gravity of their God-given responsibilities.

The Bible is clear on this point:  “First of all, I urge that petitions, prayers, intercessions, and thanksgiving be offered on behalf of all men, for kings and all those in authority, so that we may lead tranquil and quiet lives in all godliness and dignity…”  It is remarkable that this was written when Rome was the great authority and there was no freedom apart from the pleasure of the Roman Empire.

In the days ahead, I believe the words of Abraham Lincoln can be applied to our current day.  Election 2016 is a true test:  “Now we are engaged in a great civil war, testing whether that nation, or any nation so conceived and so dedicated, can long endure.”

Pray that our generation and the election of 2016 will not lead to chaos.  Pray the transition of government is smooth and seamless…no matter who wins on November 8.  Because this will be a true test if our nation will survive.  The world is watching.  May God help us.
