When I think about Throw Back Thursday, I think that it has to be something from long ago. Imagine my shock when I looked at this photo and thought, “Well, that’s too recent.” Then I did the math in my head. This picture was 20 years ago. WHAT? How can that be? But 20 years ago, I was serving as a Peace Corps Volunteer in Swaziland, Africa. This picture is actually a group we worked with outside our official Peace Corps jobs. It was a neighborhood group that we helped with some of their crops and production. There are things to be noticed in the photo. Look closely and you will clearly see the woman in front with the goiter. Goiters were prevalent. All salt that was imported was NOT iodized. It was also very cultural that the women sit on the ground and are always just a little separated from the men.
I feel like this all happened just yesterday. I think that is one of the joys of #TBT. Being able to sit for a moment and remember a different time.
YOUR TURN: If you are of the age that you have LOTS of memories, take a second and think back on a special moment in time. If you are young… it is critical that you realize that every moment of this life is to be treasured. It doesn’t have to be an over-the-top photograph to matter. This tattered, faded photo is more than enough to bring back the smells, the heat and sweet memories of Swaziland.
